Why the holidays are the best time to look for a job
by Patricia Rivera, CTW Features on Pilly.com
If the holidays seem like a time to slow down on the job search, don’t be fooled: it’s actually one of the best times of the year to look … Career experts say the holidays create some benefits that may play to your advantage, including the presence of ongoing company parties and gatherings, the break that other job seekers may take, the general goodwill and generosity among people and possible company expansion for the new year. Sure, some managers may take vacation, but they’re also still networking themselves at different social and professional functions.
“You definitely don’t want to slow down. It’s a great time to meet people and catch the attention of decision makers who are hiring,” says Steve Frederick, an executive career coach outside of Chicago. Some companies may also be positioning themselves to grow in 2014. You don’t want to wait until January, when their new budgets are often in place, to make yourself known as a strong candidate…“Since the hiring process takes a lot of time, a January hire can be put into motion in October or November,” Frederick adds. Why the Holidays Are the Best Time to Look for a Job
Most people stop their job search between November and the new year. They’re swamped with holiday hoohah and figure most employers are focusing more on Ho Ho Ho than Hire Hire Hire. But here are six ring-a-ling reasons why you should replace some of your holiday-shopping time with job-search time:
- Many employers are finalizing their annual budgets. Indeed, they may be under pressure to get fully staffed-up for the new year.
- Many employers, especially in government, have use-it-or-lose-it funds. If they don’t spend it by year-end, the money goes back to the general fund and the agency is criticized. (Of course, that’s one of the many causes of government waste. Instead of an agency being rewarded for thriftiness, it gets punished.)
- Most job seekers stop job-searching during the holidays. That means you’re facing less competition.
- Employers are less busy and thus more likely to answer their phones and to be in good spirits.
